Every year, I find myself drawn back to the mesmerizing Greek islands. With their timeless beauty, diverse landscapes, and vibrant cultures, these islands are a haven for every kind of traveler. In this article, I’m sharing my 15 favorite Greek island-hopping itineraries—perfect whether you’re visiting for the first time or embarking on an extended exploration.
Things to Know About Greek Island Hopping
The Greek Islands have ferries crossing each other’s paths all summer long. But they don’t necessarily match up and you often need to spend an extra day on an island (especially smaller ones like Patmos) to get your journey to make sense. It’s hard to find regular ferry schedules before the end of April.

FerryHopper is the best place to book your tickets – book early. Most are cancellable. Be careful which port in Athens where you embark and disembark.
And on the subject of tickets -download them or print them.
The Best Time to Visit
Greek islands are vibrant year-round, but tourist activities, including restaurants, bars, and tours, often take a hiatus from November through April.

However, these islands don’t shut down completely, as locals live and thrive year-round. The best time for an island-hopping adventure? Late May to October.
These months promise warm weather, open businesses, and ideal ferry connections. Plus, early or late in the season, you’ll avoid the peak crowds and peak prices.
How Many Islands in One Go?
The number of islands you can visit depends on how much time you have. Here’s my rule of thumb:
- Up to 7 days: 2 islands
- Up to 10 days: 3 islands max
- Two weeks: 3-4 islands max, ideally 3
- One month: 6 islands or more but ideally 3-4
Remember that ferry travel takes time, and not all islands are directly connected. Planning extra travel days between islands is essential to enjoy your trip without feeling rushed.
Perhaps even more importantly is the size of the island. 6 days on Milos is lovely, but you can easily spend two weeks on Crete, Rhodes, and Corfu.
Getting Around
Ferries are the heart and soul of Greek island hopping. Each journey offers a slice of local life, from watching families unload supplies to mingling with fellow travelers.

The ferries vary in size and speed, and sometimes, the ride itself is an experience worth savoring. If you suffer from seasickness, opt for larger vessels instead of high-speed ferries.
Planes can be a time-saver, especially when traveling from Athens or Thessaloniki to hubs like Rhodes or Crete. From there, you can continue your journey by ferry.
TIP: For ferry schedules and tickets, I always use Ferryhopper.com, which makes the process seamless and simple to change and cancel.
Budgeting for Your Adventure
Greek island hopping doesn’t have to break the bank. A budget of around €80-100 per day can cover basic accommodations and meals, but ferry tickets can add up as can transport from the ferry port to the towns on islands like Santorini.

However, this is a bare-bones budget, and it’s easy to spend way, way more, especially if you indulge in luxury hotels or fine dining or don’t book 6 months in advance.
Keep in mind that some islands, like Mykonos, Santorini, and Paros tend to be double prices in July and August, so plan accordingly.
Budget travelers can still enjoy authentic experiences with family-run taverns and cozy guesthouses, and staying away from the water’s edge.
Choosing Your Itinerary
Your itinerary depends on your travel goals and how much time you have. Consider what you want from your trip: vibrant nightlife, rich history, serene beaches, or a mix of all three.

Many travelers start with a bustling island like Mykonos or Santorini before winding down in a quieter destination like Naxos or Amorgos. Remember to balance your itinerary with a mix of exploration and relaxation.
Seasonal Considerations
While late spring to early autumn is the prime time for island hopping, each season offers its own unique charm.

Early summer (May-June) provides warm weather without the high-season crowds, while September and October feature mild temperatures and lower prices.
Winter trips can offer solitude and an authentic look at local life, though ferry connections and tourist services are very limited.
Unique Local Experiences
Make your island-hopping adventure unforgettable by diving into authentic experiences. On Naxos, join a local cooking class and learn to make regional specialties like melopita (honey pie).

In Milos, take a small boat tour to explore hidden beaches and sea caves. For history enthusiasts, Delos offers guided tours that bring the Sacred Island to life.
Don’t miss the opportunity to join summer festivals, where you can dance and dine alongside locals under the stars.
