Things to Know About Greek Island Hopping

The Greek Islands have ferries crossing each other’s paths all summer long. But they don’t necessarily match up and you often need to spend an extra day on an island (especially smaller ones like Patmos) to get your journey to make sense. It’s hard to find regular ferry schedules before the end of April.

How Many Islands in One Go?

The number of islands you can visit depends on how much time you have. Here’s my rule of thumb:

Up to 7 days: 2 islands
Up to 10 days: 3 islands max
Two weeks: 3-4 islands max, ideally 3
One month: 6 islands or more but ideally 3-4

Remember that ferry travel takes time, and not all islands are directly connected. Planning extra travel days between islands is essential to enjoy your trip without feeling rushed.

Perhaps even more importantly is the size of the island. 6 days on Milos is lovely, but you can easily spend two weeks on Crete, Rhodes, and Corfu.
