Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What qualifications do your archaeological guides have?

All our lead guides are professional archaeologists with advanced degrees and extensive field experience in Mediterranean archaeology. Our Cyprus archaeological guide, for example, holds university degrees in Classical Studies, Archaeology, and Soil Science, and has been working on excavations in Cyprus since 1977, including significant contributions to the Aceramic Neolithic site at Kalavasos-Tenta and Late Bronze Age tombs at sites like Ayios Dhimitrios.

Our Malta expert has extensive experience in prehistoric archaeology and Mediterranean studies. Our Greece team includes specialists in Minoan archaeology with deep expertise in Bronze Age Crete. They’re not just tour guides – they’re practicing archaeologists who live and work in these ancient landscapes.

Q: How physically demanding are the archaeological sites?

Most of our archaeological sites involve moderate walking on uneven ancient surfaces, stairs, and some uphill paths. Many historical sites are up high – acropoli, castles and fortifications, as well as mountain sanctuaries. In addition, some countries are known for their laneways and stairs, such as Greek islands, Italy, and Valletta in Malta.

We design our itineraries to be accessible to anyone with reasonable mobility, and our small groups allow us to adapt the pace to suit everyone’s comfort level. We’re happy to discuss any concerns before booking.

Q: What's the maximum group size and why?

We limit our groups to just 12 travelers, compared to most archaeological tour companies that take 16-18 people. We don’t like overwhelming family restaurants and small museums and we want to be able to stay in boutique accommodation, rather than the type of mega hotels that require coach parking and are out of town.

The main reason for the small size of our groups, however, is that it allows for genuine archaeological conversations, the ability to linger at sites that fascinate you, and access to smaller locations that can’t accommodate larger groups. Most importantly, it means you can have real discussions with our archaeologists rather than just listening to lectures.

Q: Do you visit active excavation sites?

While we don’t guarantee access to active excavations (as these depend on seasonal dig schedules and safety requirements), our local archaeological guides maintain relationships with ongoing projects and provide access when possible. What we do guarantee is that you’ll learn from archaeologists who have actually worked on major sites n the countries you’re visiting.

Q: What's included in the tour price?

Our tours include professional archaeological guidance throughout, accommodation, most meals, all entrance fees to archaeological sites and museums, ground transportation, and small group experiences. We also include cruises, ferries, and internal flights. Specific inclusions vary by tour and are detailed on each tour page. International flights are not included, allowing you flexibility in your travel arrangements. We recommend that you don’t book your flight until we have confirmed the tour is going ahead.

Q: How do your tours differ from standard cultural tours?

Our tours are led by professional archaeologists rather than general tour guides, focusing on the methodology and science behind archaeological discoveries. We specialize exclusively in Mediterranean archaeology, allowing for deep expertise in the interconnected civilizations of Cyprus, Malta, and Greece. Our small groups enable genuine archaeological discussions rather than one-way presentations.

Q: What level of archaeological knowledge do I need?

Absolutely zero – no prior archaeological knowledge is required. What you do need is a deep desire to have an incredible time visiting the world’s most exciting destinations!

Our experts are skilled at adapting their insights to accommodate both complete beginners and those with archaeological backgrounds. We believe the best archaeological tours spark curiosity and deepen understanding, regardless of your starting point.

And of course, there’s a lot more to dig into than visits to archaeological sites – we work in the Mediterranean, some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. Dive into turquoise waters, slouch on a chair on your balcony and read a book, eat meze until you’re fit to burst, shop for gorgeous local handmade crafts and clothes – we promise you’re going to have a memorable time on tour with us.

Q: How do you support local communities?

We’re proud members of Responsible Travel and are committed to creating sustainable livelihoods in the communities where we work. We hire local archaeologists and guides preferentially, support local universities and archaeological programs, and ensure that your tourism directly contributes to the communities that safeguard these ancient treasures for future generations.

Q: What will I see and do apart from visiting archaeological sites?

How do we answer this question succinctly? We stroll around the suburbs, villages, and towns near where we stay. We visit local museums, we hang out in squares and plazas, tavernas, and bars drinking coffee or wine. We taste the regional foods and wines every day. We grab a gelato by the sea, we read by the pool and on our balconies, we nap, shop, swim, and chat for hours with our new companions. Oh, and we also visit archaeological sites…

Q. Do I have to pay a solo supplement?

If you are traveling solo and you’d like your own room, then the solo supplement will apply to you. If you’d like a room buddy (and we can guarantee twin beds), we’ll do our best to find you one, and then there will be no solo supplement.

We ask that you begin the booking process as a single booking so that the solo supplement will apply, and let us know you’d like a room buddy.
