What to Expect

Spring and Fall in Northern Greece is mainly fine (4-7 days of rain on average per month), and an average daytime temperature of 24 °C – 26 °C (75 – 80 °F). It is a diverse climate with cooler mountain hideaways. We take advantage of the long, warm shoulder seasons for optimal conditions to explore archaeological sites and historical monuments. We design our experiences to avoid the crowds and give you time to get lost in the moment.

Itinerary

Day 1Welcome to Athens

We meet this evening at our boutique hotel in central Athens for a drink and dinner, watching the monuments of the Acropolis light up as evening falls.

Day 2Ancient Delphi

After breakfast at our hotel, we set off for northern Greece to visit our first UNESCO World Heritage site – Ancient Delphi.

First, we check into our 4-star hotel, whose balconies overlook the mountains and the sea. After a traditional meal with wine, we meet our archaeologist guide for a private tour of the Delphi archaeological zone, museum, and the Tholos of the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia. 

We end our day with a feast of traditional regional foods and wines as the sun sets on our first full day of adventuring in northern Greece!

Day 3The Monasteries of Meteora

After breakfast at our hotel, we travel to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Eastern Orthodox Monasteries of Meteora.

Our day is spent exploring these vertiginous sacred wonders. Our guide leads us on a private tour of several monasteries, and we walk to viewpoints of surely one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world.

Sunset tonight is not to be missed!

Day 4Ancient Dion

After breakfast at our hotel, we begin our journey into the heart of the Macedonian Empire. We reach the town of Dion in the foothills of Mount Olympus, where we eat lunch in the garden of an informal Greek cafe known for its Moussaka and home-made feta.

After lunch, we take a private guided tour of the most sacred city in Macedonia, Ancient Dion.

It’s time to continue our journey north to Greece’s second city, Thessaloniki. We set off for Thessaloniki, check in to our charming boutique 4-star hotel, before a Macedonian evening meal with wine.

Day 5The Treasures of Thessaloniki

After breakfast at our hotel, we give ourselves over to the treasures of Thessaloniki. We head out for a private Thessaloniki walking tour. We’ll visit the White Tower, the statue of Alexander the Great, the Galerian Complex, the Greek Agora, and Roman Forum, and much more.

Over our two days in Thessaloniki, we want to see as many of its UNESCO treasures as possible!

This evening is free for you to choose a wonderful Greek taverna or chic restaurant for dinner.

Day 6Ancient Pella

After breakfast at our hotel, we spend our morning visiting the archaeological site of Ancient Pella and the Archaeological Museum of Pella.

The afternoon and evening are at your leisure to explore Thessaloniki’s many charms.

Day 7Ancient Philippi and Kavala

After breakfast at our hotel, we head out for a private guided tour of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ancient Philippi. This is the city founded by King Philipp II and lays the groundwork for our trip the day after next to see the tomb of King Philipp II.

After working up an appetite at Ancient Philippi, we head to the beach where you are free to choose a beachside taverna in Kavala for a seafood lunch. 

Upon return to Thessaloniki, the evening is at your leisure.

Day 8The UNESCO Monasteries of Mount Athos

After breakfast this morning we travel for just over 2 hours to the seaside town of Ouranoupolis where we board a cruise along the coast of the Mount Athos Peninsula.

The Peninsula is off-limits to women, and so we choose to view these magnificent UNESCO World Heritage monuments by sea.

We return to Thessaloniki for our last night together and in anticipation of our final day on tour. We This evening we eat a wonderful meal of northern Greek specialties matched with northern wines.

Day 9The Royal Macedonian Tombs

After breakfast at our hotel, we travel to what we believe is the pièce de résistance of our Northern Greece tour – we’ve saved the best for last!

We travel south for one hour to Vergina, and take a private tour with our archaeologist guide of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ancient Aigai (Vergina). We visit the new Polycentric Museum, the gateway to the site, and then venture under the tumulus to the Museum of the Royal Macedonian Tombs where we discover the tomb of King Philip II and the astonishing grave goods buried with him.

We feast on local cuisine and wine at a local award-winning winery, before setting off for Thessaloniki airport and the end of our Northern Greece tour.
